Frog and Toad

sofia is 26 today !

sofia and i became friends when we were 18. i sat on her pink bed, leaning into a giant stuffed teddy bear, the very first day i met her, much to her chagrin. if i had known her any better, i would have stayed on the floor. we were not immediately friends, and even after becoming friends, we almost didn’t last. ultimately, we were saved by a rocky couple of months in mexico city. she had a parasite and i had no other friends. (thank god).

after a personal journey with god on a mormon mission, i resolved i would never see her (or my other freshman year friends) again. i was better now. no swearing, no bikinis, no rated R movies, i was destined to be god’s best mormon girl and i finally knew it.

this master plan of mine changed when our friend annabelle died in october of 2020. suddenly, tragically, far away. our whole friend group grieved. sofia maybe the most. i needed my freshman year friends again. so we met up in january of 2021. we’ve been inseparable since and my life is only better because of my friendships with them.

but today is sofie’s birthday so i want to tell you about her!

one of the best things about sofia is her intensity. she doesn’t do anything by half measures. when she loves, it’s all the way. when she’s disappointed, it’s completely. sofia knows how to feel things deeply and that is something i appreciate as someone who also feels things deeply. big feelings for the win.

sofia is kind. she listens and offers good advice. she does research and she offers helpful solutions. if i ever need someone to snap me back to reality, sofia is the person i call. 

sofia is smart. she has interesting things to share and she is always learning new things. despite being one of the most intelligent people i know, she comes across as down to earth. she is never going to make anyone feel dumb. she wants everyone to feel loved and welcome.

sofia is brave. she chooses to see the good in other people until there is literally no other possibility. sofia lives life with gusto (even if she doesn’t think so). she is the first to suggest a group hangout and the last one to leave. sofia loves her friends. 

most importantly, sofia shows up for people. for her family, for her friends, for her patients. she is rarely thanked, but she still shows up again. and again. and she always will. sofia is trustworthy because she follows through on her word. and i feel so lucky to be one of the people she shows up for.
